Welcome to Aldea Birder Blog

Welcome to AldeaBirder.blogspot.com.

This is a new beginning. This new blog is written by a resident of Aldea de Santa Fe (ie. me) to catalog, share, comment on and enjoy the beautiful variety of birds seen within our borders throughout the year. Many residents are avid birders of all levels here.

But many members of the community think there are no significant birds within the Aldea boundaries to speak of. Many people have trouble with identification. This blog is out to show you the cornucopia of avian friends we have. It is amazing that there are over 500 species that live or migrate through New Mexico over the course of a year.

In our first year of living in Aldea we noted over 50 different species of birds in our backyard and we also whole-heartedly turned the bare dirt of our yard into a wildlife habitat. Without even knowing it we followed the National Wildlife Federation's guidelines and set up a Certified Wildlife Habitat by default.

It was easy as we gradually added food, water, nesting boxes and many trees. Especially evergreen trees where songbirds can hide and seek safety from predators. We were rewarded by attracting many birds to our yard and we got a special bonus of seeing two broods of Western Bluebirds fledge in our first year of living here. It was a joyful hoot! Other birds also have become regulars.

I hope this sets the stage for a successful blog. My goal is to photograph every species that visits the yard and share my observations and interesting bird facts for Aldeans and all those interested.

Let's get started.
